Blizzard Style texture painting exercise: Axe & Sheild

Here is the work that was completed in the Axe & Shield exercise. The aim is to take the techniques learned from the Tyson Murphy tutorial and create my own piece of work using the same processes.
Above is a 1 hour concept that was created as a template from which the weapon and shield can be modeled in Maya. Also it serves as a colour palette that is used when texturing the props. As you can see from the concepts the shiloutte of the axe and shield shares the WOW bulky style.

This images above show the texturing process of  the axe and shield.

This work was posted onto polycount where advice was given about adding saturation to the texture. as you can see the new version in the image above stands out a lot more.
This first go at texturing the axe and shield was unsuccessful as the colours chosen for the metal looked too blue, the golds too yellow and the general colour palette didn't work.

The initial concept was re-worked to see if other materials would better suit the model.

The second texture pass works a lot better. These textures are more believable and the highlights are a lot sharper than before. Yet still the texture looks dull. TO MUCH BRASS! More vibrant colours would help give the texture visual interest and character.
The third texture pass proved far more successful. The introduction of the blues into the metal and the vibrancy of the golds gives the texture an attractive quality.

The images above show how the textures have changed with each pass.

This was an extremely fun exercise which challenged my colour theory and texture painting skills. It was my first attempt at modelling and texturing my own design and helped better my understanding of Blizzard texture painting techniques.
